I don't think anybody is talking about perforating/removing/modifying the actual muffler. I think any cosmetic changes to the exhaust opening could all be done on the post-muffler pipe/tip, a la the Chevrolet "bow tie."
Any mods to the pipe/tip after the muffler would have negligible effects on sound and emissions.
And to tell you the truth, I'm pretty sure the muffler has little or no effect on emissions, either. That's the job of the catalytic converter. The cat con DOES have an effect on the sound of the exhaust, however (just ask anybody who's pulled their cat out to increase flow.)
I think that a 1" x 4' opening WOULD provide enough of an opening for the exhaust if the feeder pipe between the muffler and the "long slit" opening had a bit of thought put into it. You'd have to think about how to hang that big wide thing across the back of the car, as well.
