A dictatorship can be kept US friendly, but by definition, a dictatorial government is usually limited to the lifespan of one man. If the despot is especially repressive, and relies on US support to prop him up, it would forment anti- US sentiment in the population at large, giving rise to organized terrorism.

So, over the short term, a friendly dictatorial government would be more responsive to US interests, but more damaging over the long term.

In this light, democratic governments would tend to lend more stability to other democracies the world over. In addition, internal discontent would have more avenues of expression rather than violence.
