I've been lucky with my roommate... he's cool, and doesn't trash the room.
My friend, however, had a roommate from hell. She tried to be friends with all of my friend's friends, but the roomie was always about 5 minutes behind in any conversation. She had no sense of humor, and would laugh at all the wrong times, in that way that you could tell she didn't really know what was funny, but was just laughing anyway. She would eat my friend's food. She left her smelly hockey gear in the middle of the room, so the entire room reeked.
One of the worst things was one time, we got back to my friend's room, and her roommate was sitting in my friend's chair, watching a dvd on my friend's laptop, with her feet on my friend's bed.
She also would decide to do work at very odd times... Like at 1 AM on a saturday morning when my friend and I were in the middle of a movie... and she would ask us to either leave or turn it down.
She also had a habit of saying she was going to bed (again, usually early on weekends) so we would go somewhere else. Then, we'd come back in an hour or so to get something from my friend's room, and the roommate would still be up, talking on AIM. As soon as we'd walk in, she'd finish her conversation, turn off her computer, and climb into bed.
My friend moved out partway through the first semester. Big surprise there...
