Yea, I've been hearing about Duke Nukem Forever since like 11th grade in high school, and that was over six years ago. The screenshots from then seemed amazing back then, but they're the same screenshots we've got to look at now, and now they look antiquated. It's a shame it's taking so long, since Duke Nukem 3D had such a great story and main character and overall immersibility into the game. The depth and interactivity was unsurpassed up to that point. Doom had started it all, Dark Forces showed what could be done, but it was Duke Nukem 3D that really peaked 2.5d gaming. However, Quake put an end to that limited FPS engine, and we haven't looked back since (ok, we had Shadow Warrior, but that paled next do Duke 3D).
If they rush to get Duke Nukem Whenever out the door just to make a game for the sake of having one, we'll get another Daikatana. Admittedly, Doom 3 and Half-Life, and even Deus Ex 2, are going to be impossible to beat if DNF is using an old Unreal or UT engine and Duke 3D's "find the key" and "find the secret switch that's impossible to find" outdated styles of gameplay. Games like Half-Life and Deus Ex have shown what the future of FPS are.
