I agree with Halx- at least in part. He didn't go much further than the issue but I think manners and chivalry should carry their own weight. I think women and those getting on in their years deserve an amount of respect separate from men I'll meet on the street.
Etiquette such as table manners (proper fork, spoon, saucer, et al), saying 'god bless you' after a sneeze, or any other form of conditioned response is a little dated for a modern society.
But the discussion was about hats, and my thought is that any restaurant where it's decent to remove your hat when you sit down is a restaurant that I wouldn't be wearing a hat in to begin with.
