Just thought I'd add my $.02
I wear a hat everyday for work. At some point wearing a hat became so natural, it was just like wearing a shirt or pants. When i take it off, I feel naked (more like missing something but you can't really figure out what it is.) Also after about two weeks my hats are so grungy, dirty and caked with sweat I don't take them off and set them somewhere out of courtesy.
Now, not really sure if that is what you are refering to, or if you are refering to a more fromalized environment (then yes my hat is off).
