Secondary Amenorrhea is what it's called when a woman who has already started menstruating experiences 3 or more consecutive missed periods. Look it up so you feel informed (and not scared) when you speak with your ob/gyn about it.
A few things come to mind that could cause it, other than menopause and pregnancy:
- extreme exercise regime
- sudden change in weight (gain or loss)
- depression
- stress
- change in birth control
- STDs
- retrograde menstruation (flows into tubes, not expelled from body)
- hormone imbalance due to underlying gynecological condition such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or poly-cystic ovarian syndrome
In any case, it is a warning sign that you should address with a medical professional. The first thing they are likely to do is give you a pregnancy test to rule out the easiest answer.
