Without looking it up, and just relying on my twenty-five-year-history of playing the titles, a
drowning death could be achieved in the original Super Mario Bros., I believe, in one of the two(?) water stages within the game. As you begin the level, you notice that there is a sea portion of the screen, with also, a little bit of sky available at the top. I'm not exactly sure how long Mario could hold his breath, but I always tried to manage 20 seconds under, but no more than 30 before sprinting toward the surface.
A "Long Fall" death - I was just about to describe a
Super Mario Land stage, but that correlates to the
Tornado death directly above the one in which you are describing. I don't really know about that one - do you think anyone else has a guess?
