Four school friends from the Mornington Peninsula (Victoria) formed The Fauves. The band took its name from the art movement Fauvism, which was characterised by both its intensity and infatuation with colour. Andrew Cox and Philip Leonard were entirely self-taught, managing to eschew standard musical formats and conventional guitar tunings in the process. The band's early sound was an energetic distillation of garage-punk rock riffs and surreal lyrics.
