Rhodes decided to write his own story.
"She survived her childhood with only scratches & bruises," he began composing in his mind, "but couldn't help pretending her injuries had been more severe. Before very long she concluded her time was more limited than anyone else's & acted it by imagining illnesses. "Do you think I want to feel this way?" she asked her brother, once or twice. "Yes," he told her, "or at least it seems so," as usual careful of her feelings.
Desiree's competence at reading her twin's mind had been improved by the products of her "accidents" with the merman, so she couldn't help grinning as she said, "NICE! But can you write that with a STRAIGHT face?"
"Sis!" Rhodes excaimed, "Does that matter?"
"I've found it...useful, now & again," she said to him.
