I would have counted the relative conservative nature of the society as a whole as one reason for a low birth rate personally.

Damn, I can't believe I forgot this so soon. I was looking at an atlas last month or so, paying particular attention to the Mediterranean area and noticed that Greece wasn't where I thought it was. I was surprised somewhat because I'd always heard of the Greek Isles, but never really paid attention in geography class too much to where they are.
