Zeet: The laws and regulations for your area are going to differ from the original posters' (in 2006) and as such we can't give precise advice. Generally speaking, though, when you go to court for a moving violation you will meet with the district attorney (DA) or assistant DA. Based on your driving history, their docket and willingness to prosecute, and extenuating factors, they may offer you a reduced sentence ("defective headlight", "careless driving", "obstructed view") in exchange for you pleading guilty to the lesser sentence.

If it is entirely a mail-in ticket, then some municipalities will reduce the sentence if the fee is paid in a certain amount of time, usually the first 15 or 20 days.
