I think you're wrong. In the past, dictators have shown themselves irresponsible, and their rule unsustainable, even with US help. Democracies are relatively stable and open. That makes installing democracies much better for the USA in the long term. I think they've learned their lesson after the last decades.
In fact, I think the USA as a whole, deep down, *wants* someone to challenge them; they love a good fight and honest competition...
