I'm not sure this a black-and-white thing.
My dad snores and he's moved to another room because the master bed was customized to accomodate my mom's back problems.
But I've had SO's who were heavy snorers and I would sleep elsewhere to get away from it. My guess would be that the non-snorers started that way (leaving the snorer as he/she was nearly impossible to move or awaken) and became used to sleeping in the secondary area.
I second the Breathe Right strips.
