Tipping in NYC is very important.
I know plenty of career food service people and it's not like they are just some "actor" or "college student" trying to make some money (yes, I do have some of those friends too) but the ones that are serious give serious service, from remembering things like no onions in my wife's dishes, to knowing just how I like my martini without having to mention or ask.
Shoddy Service is a shame, and it's a shame that the IRS taxes them on tips that they have yet to recieve, thus putting the burden on the consumer to make the bad decision of tipping bad service.
