As for the one upping... it's the beauty of competition and an open sourced platform. You get choice.You want a phone with a slide out keyboard? You got it. You want a phone that's cheaper? you got it. You want a phone that can do this over that? Sure! Android's fundamental principals are based upon this. Anyone can go download and use the source code for the operating system if they want... it's even fairly easily to load it onto some phones designed for windows mobile.
HTC only has one phone currently in VZW's lineup. Motorola has the X and the Droid 2 as well as a base model. It isn't that spread out. All of the main flagship phones have been updated at a fairly good pace... yes there are a few cheaper models that don't get it as fast... but hey, it is very easy to go update the software on your own. You can install different variations or 'roms' on your own... there were quite a few people who went out and installed 2.2 prior to it being released for their phones...
