Considering that I occupy a good amount of page inches in this thread, I'll assume that your comments are directed toward me. I would like to respond with some broad, self-centered thoughts on the subject. I realize that you and I have had many differing opinions in the past but hear me out.
Within reason I've done as much as I can to support TFP. I've donated several paltry sums of my college-kid blood money. I've brought at least two active users to the board directly and numerous ones indirectly through posting excerpts of Google-able conversations and links to TFP on other sites. I encourage all my friends to join but they're not forum people. Short of making TFP t-shirts and tagging freeway overpasses with our beloved acronym, I've done what I can to encourage new blood. I like the TFP and find it to be unique among the Intarwebz. It's not Fark, it's not SAwful, it's not Reddit.
I've also attempted to be thoughtful in posts when it matters. When people are dealing with relationships issues, sex problems, etc., I always attempt to address the issue first before I start in with the one-liners and .JPG sight gags. I realize that my initial comments in this thread were not helpful. I think I posted what I did in response to the feeling that someone who doesn't post a whole lot was bitching about how "things have gone to shit." If you want to affect change here at TFP, you have to show up, stand and deliver... otherwise you get threads filled with my tiring, useless comments.
As little as I bring to the table with my several thousand posts, at least I bring something. All this bitching about an Internet forum not providing some level of intellectual exchange is a little funny when you can't get the users who are complaining to actively engage in the conversations. I'll be the first to admit that my comments turn juvenile in discussions where it's the same six people twiddling their verbal thumbs. If it's not deep, why be serious?
Any time that anybody has bitched about TFP changing or being stagnant or whatever the jerkoff Original Staff (TM) complaint is... I just do a little self-inventory and see if I've done anything I listed in the first paragraph recently and, if not, I make it happen. That's the best you can do, right? Or you can be Those Guys who just show up to post snarky bullshit every three years about how nothing has changed... which is confusing.
To those that say that TFP has/hasn't changed, just consider the people at the board. I'm going to be the same dickhead two decades from now, guys. I'm prosaic. I'm never going to be as good a writer as Baraka or as M.C. Escher'd as Roachboy. I'm not into marriage and kids but enjoy firearms and wild sex. That's who I am. If you're tired of that personality and the predictable-after-three-years responses, I don't know what to tell ya.
As annoying as World's King's dead hooker jokes are... I recognize them as a part of his personality and I'm glad he's at the board to supply them.
...
But, yeah, I can only comment on what I do to help the forum because I'm not aware of what the rest of you do. I can only assume it is similar.
