I agree that the communication stones are perhaps being utilized a lot, but if you were on that ship, wouldn't you be using them as much as possible? If people on any team are your most valuable resource, then the ability to bring on-board experts in any field is pretty awesome.
More than the other Stargates, this one seems to take some serious risks -- killing off the leader of the L.A. (although she was very one-dimensional "evil leader" sort of character) and just now killing off Riley (who was a fan favorite from what I've seen online) as well as that cliff-hanger where Rush was left stranded on the planet by Young. More than any other show, when Young walked through the Stargate at the end of the episode and it closed behind him and the ship jumped I went "NO WAY!! THEY LEFT HIM!" even though I knew as a main character he'd have to come back. Still... a shocking moment.
