Of course it was about winning the war, but not more so than any of the other Tools of Destruction. I don't think it was viewed as a Magical War Ending Bomb
before it was dropped and was used largely because we didn't understand that it was
more than just another Tool of Destruction. Without that understanding, which exists mainly in hindsight, the question in the OP doesn't make any more sense than "Why did the US use napalm in WWII?".
