I am female & will answer the OP's question:
I am a retired tool & die maker. That alone back in '86 raised many a brow,
especially since I wasn't a..their term..>'dyke'. Only a dyke could
love loud greasy mechanical stuff, right?
The whole gay/lesbo split confuses me too. Homosexual cultural confusion
is alive & well too.
