bingo!!! I am on Christian Island. You're up next, unc.
I spent a week there a few years ago with a bunch of my cousins from Canada. We stayed in a strange little cottage owned by the local Indians and we had a great time. We rented a motor boat from the Indian guy who owned the trading post/general store at the ferry dock on the mainland...cool boat with fins looked like a '57 Chevy in the water.
Christian Island is a large island in Georgian Bay close to the communities of Penetanguishene and Midland, Ontario. The island, with its neighbors Hope Island and Beckwith Island, is a 13,413.1 acre Ojibwa reserve, known as Christian Island 30 Indian Reserve. Together with the 18.5 acre Christian Island 30A Indian Reserve located at Cedar Point, Ontario and the 7.7 acre Chippewa Island Indian Reserve located in Twelve Mile Sound, 17.1 mi north of Christian Island, it forms the land base for the Beausoleil First Nation.
One day I took my cousin back to the mainland and headed back to the island in the boat. About half way across the motor suddenly died. I tried everything to get it started and nothing worked. It was getting kinda dusky and windy as I was drifting out of the inlet between the mainland and Christian Island, out toward the open waters of the Georgian Bay. In my head I was starting to hear the song by Gordon Lightfoot about the big lake they call "Gitche Gumee" and was imagining I'd soon be looking at the Edmund Fitzgerald if I didn't get this damn boat started. I decided that if I didn't get it running before I passed the tip of the island, I'd jump and swim to shore before I was too far out to try that. Just then another motorboat approached and I can see it's two local Indian guys. As they come closer they ask me about the boat, apparently they were suspicious that I may have stolen it from their buddy. But I tell them I rented it for the week. Eventually they started laughing at this stupid white man and finally told me to hook up the gas line to the tank cause they could see it was knocked off. After I did that the boat started right up again and only my pride was injured...but thanks to those two guys, whoever you were.
