The interesting thing I've noticed about Redskins games in the past half-decade-to-decade or so, is that when they play within the division, even sometimes outside of it, their defense always keeps them in games. It's a "bend but don't break" mentality for the most part, I think, that keeps a perpetual 'Skins' fan fuming, yet hopeful; allowing the dink-and-dunk plays, occasional field goals, but they somehow, still save the big plays from happening against them. With the exception of the second matchup against the Giants (total blowout) they were in every game against their division rivals up until the 4th quarter, where they can never quite finish.
Really quite annoying to have an offense so inept, you are neck-and-neck for most of the game, with some of the more potent offenses in the league (NO, Phi, SD, Dal) yet it's still a struggle to get even a field goal for them, let alone a touchdown. I've noticed the same thing with the Bucs (my team) as well as with SF (though I think they'll get over their anemic offensive woes this season).
Another interesting tidbit of trivia: Last season, the 'Skins lost a total of five of their games by a margin of 3 points or less, plus another handful of other games they lost by less than a touchdown (less impressive, but still..).
The best term I can come up with is: that the Redskins, like their home stadium in Fedex Field in Landover, MD (I think) are just one big "bog" of a team; they play up or down to their opponent, and so, too, does it seem their competition for the week "sinks" into it with them. It's just a fight for positioning most of the time, and whomever has the lucky break to catch some points here and there, wins.
