To me its not so much about leather pants being socially acceptable; it's about the image the wearer intends to convey. IMHO, guys who wear leather pants for any reason other than personal safety just come across as insecure d-bags who desperately want everyone to think they're edgy and cool. I believe the man makes the clothes look cool, no the other way around.
Women in leather pants just scream "PAY ATTENTION TO ME!" Whenever I see a women wearing them, I can't help but conjure up mental images of trying to open a grilled cheese sandwich in a swamp.

As far as I know, the "standard" for high end kit is still kangaroo leather. Pound-for-pound, it's something like 10 times stronger than cow leather and it breathes much better.
