There used to be a bunch of books written by different authors called the Fighting Fantasy Series. Basically, it was like a 'Choose Your Own Adventure', but using two 6-sided dice. Granted, they are simpler than most RPG stories, but they still had their charms.
They were really good, but I lost interest in them several years ago. Give it a shot if you're looking for something. Especially give the Sorcery! series by Steve Jackson a try. You could have the choice of using magic spells as well.
