A Storm of Swords, the appendix listing the various characters is
46 pages long. And that's the third book. Apparently he's planning seven, and that's not even counting short stories and the like that share the setting.
I've read the Silmarillion. I know what extraneous detail looks like. If you can get through the Song of Ice and Fire series, you can get through Lord of the Rings.
As for the Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms series, I remember thoroughly enjoying them when I was 13 or so, but I'm pretty sure that's because they're the sorts of books that 13 year old boys enjoy. I have no particular desire to revisit them, and would recommend we steer clear of those.

No, that ends up being the Stranger With A Mysterious Past.
Lord of the Rings is full of cheesy tropes. It just gets a pass because it created half of them.
