Higher levels of certain hormones such as DHT cause baldness. Not all follicles are created equal (just compare your head hair, beard, armpit hair, and pubes to confirm that one,) and certain follicles are more susceptible to the hair-thinning effects of these hormones than others. This is why male pattern baldness tends to progress from front to back, and why hair transplants that take follicles from the back of the head and implant them up front are able to work.
