Self-defense gunshot wounds do not occur in the backs of the aggressors. I don't think it's likely that execution is an accurate description. What is the evidence for this? For whatever reason, some passengers picked up knives and bars and attacked the boarding party - this means that the moments that followed were likely very chaotic, and in hand-to-hand combat the injuries we see here don't surprise me.
Badly botched, unprepared to subdue the passengers in a practical way, yes. Execution? I really don't think that's what happened.
