Well, you get this current of philosophy that strives to remove the artist from the formula (consider Barthes' "The Death of the Author"). I see the value in that. And when you remove the artist from the work, you essentially get to that environment where the art has no "ownership."
I think art must be interpreted by the consumer, not the creator. With regard to text, this goes along with the idea of writerly text (again, Barthes), where it's the reader who creates meaning from what is read, as opposed to readerly text, where the reader is a passive consumer who is spoon fed by the author.
Art only comes alive when the consumer can generate meaning from it; otherwise, it's just "stuff."
