I'll go with Baraka on language, specifically writing, for its ability to convey information and/or ideas to another person in a different place or time. I'd put music as a close second. Music is far less important in a practical sense, but I believe it is a higher form of expression.
For the worst, I nominate industrial agriculture, because that is what has enabled us to so incredibly overpopulate the planet. Overpopulation is, in the long run, far harder to control than atomic weapons.
