I think people are as much like dogs as Darwin thought his dogs were like people.
Animals at the core. Barely able to comprehend reality, much less the suffering of another.
For even if they did sense suffering, they'd never know how to cope with it themselves, or to help another cope with it.
Therefore, as animals do... They choose ignorance over obligations.
