We do some of both with our hiking, but we have a great book that helps us find local trails. Check out your local library, if you haven't already. Looking at the Toronto Public Library's catalogue, I found 65 titles on "hiking Ontario." This book looks promising:
Nature Hikes: Near-Toronto Trails and Adventures and it's available at the library. With a guide in hand, you can spend less time driving and more time hiking.
