I've yet to see a movie based on a book that was anywhere near as good as the book itself. For a start, unless the book was very very short, they have to leave so much out.
IMHO the best transfer from book to film was Lord of the Rings, and even then, they left out some significant sections. At times I wonder if the best idea is not to make films from short stories, like The Green Mile.
