I don't watch action movies to see how people feel. I watch them to see people kick other people's asses in violent and unique ways. "Your" (not our) heroes have become whinny, ineffectual pussies who I can't wait to see get blown up like so much cannon fodder. And don't lump Willis in with that group either, as he is fully entrenched with the bad asses of the 80's and 90's, regardless of his build.
I think we missed the chance to get back to that era when Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson decided he didn't want to be type cast and started making shitty Disney movies. He is big, bad, athletic, and most of all has an enjoyable onscreen persona that pretty much single handedly saved both Walking Tall and The Rundown. I was so excited to see what would come next for him, and then the letdown of his current streak of crap hit.
And I think there is still a crowd for that type of movie and hero. The success of most of Jason Statham's action movies (The Transporters and Cranks) can only be explained by people looking for an escape from the touchy-feely-doucheyness of Bourne and the like. And by no means are those high end films, but there is no arguement that Statham is a fully testosterone fueled bad-ass mofo in those flics.
And thats why I am wishing for a hugely successful opening weekend for The Expendables. The cast list was enough to ensure my attendance, but the previews have me counting down the days until its August premier.
