What you're describing is called Mittelschmerz, literally "middle pain."

Additionally, the ovaries are held in place by a couple of different ligaments, the ovarian ligament and suspensory ligament of the ovary. Tearing these can cause pain, but what typically tears these ligaments are serious things like problems during childbirth, inappropriately performed abortion, previous violent sexual intercourse, or rape.
