Power flows to the numbers. So much of what science does is invisible to so many that it might as well be magic or otherwise natural. Society can't protect itself from itself if it doesn't realize it needs to. Fear and superstition are powerful motivators. Science could become a scary god.
Personally, I think you can't argue productively with ignorance. It seems to be on the increase. IQ tests to vote might help a little.
Scary God Science might accomplish more.
