Jack, Samara, Zaeed, Jacob, Miranda and Thane, for example, only signed up for this suicide mission. It was pretty clear that they would leave after. Assuming they lived in your game, obviously.

Miranda can die? I didnt get Thane, Jack or Zaeed's loyalty in the first playthrough, and Jack and Zaeed died. To me she's pretty core to the story now. In fact, I view her, Garrus, Samara and Tali as the core to the team. Samara sworn an oath to Shepard's mission, and it clearly isn't over. Tali is now vas Normandy (although she's utterly useless IMO) and Miranda is just 10 times better than ashley as a love interest.
