Trying to go back can be tough. I've moved around a lot so I could either say home is where I graduated high school or home is where I was born. I've tried to go back to both. After years, most of the friends I had in high school moved, got married, or both. My parents also moved, so even though I still have some siblings in the general vicinity, going back there is not the same.
Most recently, I tried to come back to the area I was born. Where most of my extended family lives. I really don't know anyone here and I ended up an hour and a half away from my nearest relative anyway. I frequently drive through that town and it looks the same on the surface, but it's really not. Outside of one of my favorite bars, I really have no desire to go there anymore.
I have to say that going back doesn't really do much for the memories of your childhood home. At least not for me, it hasn't. I found myself wondering why I missed it in the first place. IMO, if you've been gone for an extended period of time, it's better to restrict going back to short visits.
