Yes, it's relatively easy. It's all about balancing the elements to your liking (mainly the vinegar, sugar, and chilies).

We use a chicken broth base. The basics are bok choy, snow peas, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, etc. Use some shredded chicken, and bam!

The key is to add the greens last (just before serving), and bear in mind they won't keep well in that broth.

We like it good and sour, and a bit hotter than we've had it otherwise. It's been quite impossible to find hot and sour soup around here that we like just as much as the home made.
