The liquefaction of the metal is understandable when you consider the amount of kinetic energy being converted into heat in such a short amount of time. It's wonderfully cool to see the process in the video. Somewhat similar effects happen with railguns that impart too much energy into the projectile upon launch... the projectile can't absorb the acceleration without heating, and, with more powerful guns, may actually vaporise just from being fired.
