Clay is very easy to erode, and especially the sandy clay you guys have. The stuff we have in coastal TX is "gumbo", which is a mish-mash of crap and not the same. It's more like concrete than mud sometimes. But that's why that road in that pic is utterly decimated with one flood, the soil is a weak surface to build on (and why the river runs red and thick like a milkshake). I know the red dirt and kudzu quite well, and I see both in these pics. I wouldn't be surprised if the bedrock was sandstone, but I honestly don't know.

I hope you guys recover fast. Winter's coming and you'll definitely have some rebuilding to do. Hope all your folks made it out OK too.
