I wonder if people were expecting another Kill Bill action-fest, and to be fair the trailers don't exactly dispel this myth.

Personally though the intro (Once Upon A Time in Nazi Occupied France) scene was one of my favorite QT scenes ever Spoiler: and I loved the reason to switch to English
i would say the difference between pulp fictions talking and the basterds is the people playing the characters. Pulp had a lot more star power if you will with very charismatic actors.
And maybe to me it was all the foreign languages and having to read the dialogue that made it feel longer, like a more delayed reaction.
The bastards scenes with the talking i thought much more enjoyable.
