You must've had the elusive and increasingly rare American version of Smarties. Actual English Smarties are better tasting than American M&Ms, as most English chocolate is better than most American mainstream (industrial, not boutique) chocolate. I am an American, but I have to admit it....
As for me, I am an M&M segregationist. Upon opening a packet of M&Ms (or Reese's Pieces, or Skittles, or Mike & Ikes, or jelly beans, etc.), I pour them all out onto a tabletop or desktop, and carefully separate them by color into little groups. Generally speaking, whatever color is the most plentiful gets eaten first, and so on in decreasing order, until the "rarest" color is eaten last, one by one. I am shockly non-OCD and free of compulsions about everything else in the world. It is only multicolored candy pieces that I feel compelled to separate according to their kinds, and eat in any order.
All else being equal, I will probably prefer blue M&Ms, because I feel there is a shortage of blue food in nature, that artificial coloring should make up for.
