Overkill perhaps, but we prefer to take the better safe than sorry approach. We don't use enemas when I do my wife anally & we've never had a problem, but a lot of that has to do with the depth of penetration and the amount of lubricant used. I don't have a horse dick and copious amounts of lube aren't needed, so the chances of me getting into the 'danger zone' are pretty slim.
Our strap-on has a fairly sizeable dildo attachment, & we use plenty of lube. This combination can get messy, and there's nothing sexy about smelling and seeing shit (for most people anyway), hence the enemas.
