A few basic tips, especially for using a strap-on, larger vibe/dildo, etc.:
1. If you want to make sure that things don't get messy, use enemas.
They don't have to be large volume enemas that cause cramps. Two small ones using plain warm water, held a few minutes before emptying, then repeated, works well for us. Don't be afraid to experiment to find what works best for you.
2. Use plenty of lube.
Again, use plenty of lube. Obviously lube in the rectum is needed, but also give the lube time to soften the skin around the anus. If you feel a cracking and/or burning sensation around your anus, have your partner spend some time gently rubbing in more lube.
3. Find the toys/tools that work best for you.
Experiment, and be realistic (a baseball bat sized dildo might look really cool, but probably won't feel so cool to the less experienced). In the case of strap-ons, a sturdy harness that fits very snuggly is a must for serious prolonged thrusting.
4. Take it slow.
It takes a while before the spincter will relax enough to allow penetration. Don't start vigorous thrusting until you're ready for it. If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. Don't force it, you can always try again another time.
5. Try different positions.
Especially when using a strap-on. Most women aren't used to being in the male role, and might experience discomfort such leg cramps. It helps if the man isn't straining to maintain an awkward position.
6. Know when enough is enough.
When things get uncomfortable, stop. A willingness to experiment combined with a healthy dose of common sense is key.
7. Don't base your expectations or judge your results on what you see in porn.
Just the same as regular sex. The people working in porn are employed because they have certain abilities and experience that us mere mortals probably don't have.
