I won't eat things that are too genetically similar to myself. This is because diseases that infected that animal will easily infect me. This applies to humans. If the human were free of all disease, and died of a natural cause, I would very much like to try human meat.
We don't eat it for the same reason we bury our dead--not doing so would promote disease. This is also why pork is outlawed in most major religions. Pigs are so genetically similar to us that we can accept skin grafts from a pig. The critters that inhabit pigs would also like to inhabit us.
I'm all for eating animals. I would like them to be killed in a quick manner, not allowed to suffer. If I had a choice, and the time/resources, I would kill all the meat I eat myself, clean it and cook it, so as to get a better appreciation for the animal's sacrifice. Pre-packaged cellophane animal bits just sterilize the process too much, gives PETA a foothold to scare people shitless because no one's being exposed to that stuff anymore.
