Busking is not even remotely the same as begging. I'm far more inclined to give to someone who I feel is attempting to earn my pittance. Even if the music (or other performance) is bad, I appreciate the effort involved.
I used to want to save the world. These days I give to beggars much less often. The ones who I am bothered by are the ones who seem to have a sense of entitlement.
EDIT - I believe that the term busking (and the related noun, busker) is mostly unused within the US, although it's quite common elsewhere. A busker is a performer. Busking is a career choice, albeit one of questionable legitimacy.
