Last night, I picked up my grandmother at the airport after a long stay with my uncle and his family in North Carolina. My aunt had asked me to let her know when my grandmother got home, but it was 9 p.m. here and thus 12 a.m. in North Carolina. So as not to wake her up but also get the message to her (she doesn't really use email), I sent her a text message. I'm sure her phone beeped once and that was it, allowing her to sleep but delivering the message first thing in the morning.
Texting is probably overused, but there are times when texting seems perfectly reasonable.
