I think your friend might be mistaken. I'm going to school to be a game programmer and have met a few people in the industry and they say don't expect the final version before summer 2010, closer to 2011 or later.
On a side note: One of my professors did some work at Skywalker Ranch!!! How awesome is that?!?!?!?!?
