...YES...Valle Crucis! There is a Porsche Club rental there for maximum opportunity to enjoy a wonderful sunday afternoon drive....
Valle Crucis is North Carolina’s first rural historic district and the entire community is officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nestled in the hills between the Appalachian Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwest corner of North Carolina, Valle Crucis is convenient to the other resort areas of Boone (remember AppState's football team?), Blowing Rock, and Banner Elk. Nestled along the Eastern Continental Divide at elevations of 3,000 to 5,000 feet you’ll find lush open meadows surrounded by densely forested mountains, emerald green summers, golden hued falls, winters glistening with white and springs literally bursting with wildflowers and rainbows, each painted against crystal clear Carolina Blue skies.
I rented a cabin in this valley last year for a family reunion and the area captivated me. I took a lazy afternoon drive through the area and after the scene at the watauga river (see abve), I came upon the Mast General Store, a Nationally Registered historic building as well as The Baird House (1790), The Mast Farm Inn (1812), and the Old Episcopal Mission (1842)...all restored to their original splendor. The General Store still has the original Post Office inside which is working and coffee is 5 cents. I stepped inside and there were people dancing (some unique stepping-in-one place type country dancing) with country musicians jamming...lots of penny candy, carharts, homemade icecream, 2 people playing checkers on an old barrel (actually, it was my mother and daughter...lol)...and merchandise like you wouldn't believe.
You can hike up trails to Crab Orchard Falls or along other seemingly limitless trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Riding horses through old farm fields in the valley and fishing for trout from the banks of the streams and Watauga River providing an enjoyable glimpse at the days of old...the best way to recap the day’s events is from a rocking chair placed outside in the crisp mountain air, with views of spectacular foliage and the quaint valley.
