The Year of the (British) Female?

I'm amazed by how many good female artists (or female fronted bands) are coming out of Britain lately. As with any music, some people will like what follows and others won't. Personally, I have a slight bias toward female voices, and a big bias toward electronic influences in music, so I'm loving it. The hype for these artists isn't just coming from me though: many of them haven't even released an album yet, but their popularity is quickly spreading. The best part: every one of these women writes her own songs, and at least in the case of Little Boots programs her own music on instruments like the Tenori-on.

Bat for Lashes is on their second album this year, but it's yet another contribution to the assault of great female talent from Britain

While there are a bunch of female artists breaking through from Britain this year, there are also quite a few from elsewhere in the world. Fan Death (Canada) is the only really new act, while Fever Ray (Sweden) is the new solo act of Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife. Dragonette (originally Canada, relocated to UK) and St. Vincent (US) are both on their second album. What they all have in common, though, is that 2009 looks to be the year they will see their popularity rise.
